FDA Orange Book Drug Patents & Exclusivity API

Query drug products, patents and exclusivity records with matching product context. Filter the records you need, then export JSON or CSV with traceable FDA source provenance.

$0.01 per run + $0.001 per delivered row.
Execution included. Your own Apify account is required.

Patent query

{
  "table": "patents",
  "drugName": "ACTHAR",
  "limit": 10
}

One selected table per query. Product context can accompany patent and exclusivity records.

What you receive

Source records, ready to work with.

Choose a table. Patent and exclusivity results can include the matching drug-product fields in the same row, without multiplying patents against exclusivity records.

Tables and selected fields returned by the API
TableSelected fieldsStructure
Drug productsTrade name, ingredient, applicant, strength, dosage form/route, approval date and application/product identifiers.23 fields, including provenance.
PatentsPatent number, FDA-listed expiration date, patent-use code, drug-substance/product flags, delist-request flag and submission date.44 fields with product context enabled.
ExclusivityExclusivity code and FDA-listed expiration date, with application/product identifiers.37 fields with product context enabled.

Identifiers remain text, including leading zeros. Raw date strings are retained alongside ISO dates when the source provides an exact date. Product-context fields use the product_ prefix.

Start with a focused request

Three tables. Three simple examples.

Use these JSON inputs in the Apify Console or your API request. Examples on this page do not run the Actor or incur a charge.

Drug products

{
  "table": "products",
  "applicationNumber": "008372",
  "limit": 10
}

Patents

{
  "table": "patents",
  "drugName": "ACTHAR",
  "limit": 10
}

Exclusivity

{
  "table": "exclusivity",
  "ingredient": "SITAGLIPTIN",
  "limit": 10
}

Screen an expiration-date window.

This example selects patent records with FDA-listed expiration dates from January 1, 2027 through December 31, 2030, inclusive. Matches depend on the source file at query time.

These are source-reported dates, not conclusions about patent enforceability, exclusivity applicability or actual market-entry timing.

Expiration filter
{
  "table": "patents",
  "expiresFrom": "2027-01-01",
  "expiresTo": "2030-12-31",
  "limit": 100
}

Text filters for drug name, ingredient and applicant are case-insensitive. Exact patent/exclusivity-code filters and inclusive expiration-date filters are also supported. Filters combine with AND.

Pay for the query you run

Simple usage pricing.

100$0.11

The start charge applies even when a started run finds no matching records or later fails. Rows saved before a failure may still be charged. Check the run status and manifest, and set an Apify spending limit before starting.

Inspect the data first

Three free CSV samples.

These illustrative samples come from the preserved FDA source acquired October 30, 2026. They are not the current live API response, a statistical sample, or a claim about the FDA coverage month. No Apify account is needed to download them.

The CSVs are unchanged exports from the preserved-source query examples. Read the sample notes or inspect the sample hashes.

Traceable to the source

FDA data, independently prepared.

The Actor retrieves the currently available FDA Orange Book ZIP on demand, validates its structure and normalizes the selected records. It fails visibly on source or schema errors instead of silently substituting an old snapshot.

Records retain source fingerprints, row numbers, retrieval timestamps and SHA-256 hashes. The run's MANIFEST includes source evidence, quality counts and the number of rows actually delivered.

Independently produced by Myworkingmemory; not endorsed by FDA. Source: FDA Orange Book Data Files.

Before your first query.

Do I need an Apify account?

Yes, to run the Actor. You can use Apify's Console or call the API with your own Apify token. The free sample CSVs on this page need no account. Never put a token into a shared URL or sample file.

What does one result row represent?

A row is one normalized product, patent or exclusivity source record from the selected table. With product context enabled, matching drug-product fields are appended to patent or exclusivity rows. Patent rows are not multiplied against exclusivity rows.

Can I retrieve more than one page?

Use a bounded limit from 1 to 10,000 and an offset. Spending limits can reduce the rows delivered. Follow the manifest's next_offset and pass its source_release_id as expectedSourceReleaseId on later pages to detect a source change. Keep the same filters. A changed source fails the check; this API does not retrieve earlier snapshots by hash.

Are monthly changes or historical snapshots included?

No. Each normal run queries one currently available FDA source download. This product does not include a historical change feed or a recurring update service. The free sample files preserve their stated acquisition date.

What if my query returns no matches?

The dataset can be empty while the manifest reports zero matches. A started run still incurs the $0.01 start charge. Review the filters and run status before starting another query.

Does a listed expiration date establish a drug's market-entry date?

No. The API preserves FDA-reported fields. It does not turn patent or exclusivity dates into an independent conclusion about enforceability, applicability or actual market-entry timing.
