Metadata Cleaner removes hidden information — like author names, comments, tracked changes, and document metadata — from Word and PDF files before you share them. Everything happens on your device: no account, no uploads, no cloud.

Supported Apple platforms

Metadata Cleaner is designed for supported iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro devices. Each version uses that platform’s standard document picker and sharing controls; features shown on one platform may appear in a different place on another.

Supported file types

Word documents — .docx
PDF documents — .pdf

What it does not do

It does not clean photos or inspect photo (EXIF) metadata inside images. A photo embedded in a document can still carry hidden location (GPS) or camera data — remove sensitive photos before sharing if that matters for your file.
It does not do OCR.
It is not a redaction tool — it removes hidden info, not content that is visible on the page. If private information is visible, delete it or use a true redaction tool before sharing.
It does not flatten interactive PDF form fields (they are preserved and reported as a note).
It does not clean in the cloud — there is no server processing.
It does not support legacy .doc, Excel, PowerPoint, or macro-enabled files in this version.

Good to know

Your original is not changed. The App always works on a separate cleaned copy and does not modify, overwrite, or delete your original file.

Purchase, billing, and refunds

Metadata Cleaner is free to download and uses Apple-managed auto-renewable subscriptions for cleaning access. Ruby Edition is an optional one-time purchase that adds batch cleaning, but an active Monthly or Annual Access subscription is still required to use it. Apple handles billing, taxes, local pricing, renewals, cancellations, and refunds; we do not process payments or receive payment card information.

Restore subscriptions or Ruby Edition from the purchase screen while signed into the Apple Account that made the purchase. Deleting the App does not cancel a subscription.

For refund requests, use Apple’s reportaproblem.apple.com.

Common issues

How Ruby Edition batch cleaning works

Confirm the three pre-sharing checks and choose up to 100 Word or PDF files. On Mac, choose an output folder; on iPhone, iPad, and Apple Vision Pro, share or save the resulting files with the system controls. Files are processed one at a time. One failed file does not stop the others. Existing files are never overwritten: the App adds a number to a cleaned filename when needed. The batch receipt and each result stay on your device unless you choose to share them.

Ruby Edition is owned but unavailable

Ruby Edition is a batch-cleaning add-on, not a replacement for cleaning access. Restore or renew Monthly or Annual Access, then restore Ruby Edition using the same Apple Account.

“This file type is not supported”

This version cleans Word .docx and PDF files only. When you pick a file, the document picker generally shows only supported types, so other files (for example .txt) may appear grayed out. Your original is not changed.

“This file is locked or password-protected”

Unlock or remove the password first, then clean a copy of the unlocked file. Your original is not changed.

“This file is larger than the 100 MB limit”

This version supports files up to 100 MB. Try a smaller file. Your original is not changed.

“This document appears damaged or unreadable”

The file could not be opened safely, so it was not cleaned. Try re-exporting or re-saving the document from the app that created it, then clean the new copy. Your original is not changed.

“Cleaned with notes”

The App improved the file but one or more items could not be fully removed or fully inspected (for example, a PDF’s interactive form fields are preserved rather than flattened, or a document contains embedded images whose photo metadata is not inspected). The result screen names what remains so you can decide whether the cleaned copy is safe to share.
