Thought Relay Support
Small, private tools that do one job well.
What Thought Relay is
Thought Relay catches a thought before it goes. It runs on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro. It keeps everything on your device, needs no account, and makes no network requests other than the ones Apple's own App Store framework makes to show a price and to confirm what you have bought.
Free on every platform
- Write, edit, and delete notes
- Organise notes into channels: Inbox, Next, Ideas, Words, and Life
- Pin a note so it stays at the top
- Search titles, note text, and channels
- Choose a note colour
- Keep checklists
- Share a note through Apple's system share sheet
- On Mac and Apple Vision Pro: export a note as a text or Markdown file, and print
Unlocked by a one-time purchase
These are one-time, non-consumable App Store purchases. Nothing here is a subscription and nothing renews. A purchase is tied to your Apple Account, so buying once unlocks the feature on the Apple devices you sign in to, where that device can actually provide it.
- Voice and lock — say a thought instead of typing it, keep the recording with the note, turn it into text on your device, and lock an individual note. Available on iPhone, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro.
- Apple Watch features — capture a spoken thought from your wrist, keep checklists in step between your own iPhone and your own Apple Watch, glance at recent notes, and start a capture from a complication. This one is for Apple Watch, and is not offered on Mac or Apple Vision Pro, which cannot provide it.
Restoring a purchase
On iPhone and iPad, open the upgrade screen and choose Restore Purchases. On Mac, choose Thought Relay › Restore Purchases, or open Settings › Purchases. On Apple Vision Pro, open the purchase screen and choose Restore Purchases. This asks Apple to re-check your Apple Account; nothing is sent to us.
Speaking a thought
The microphone runs only while you are recording, and the app shows that it is recording the whole time. Your words are turned into text by your device, using Apple's on-device speech recognition. If your device, its operating-system version, or your language cannot do that on-device, the recording is still kept, the note is still saved, and the note tells you that no transcript was made. Nothing is ever sent away to be transcribed.
If speaking does nothing, check that Thought Relay has permission for the microphone, and for speech recognition, in Settings on iPhone, iPad, or Apple Vision Pro, or in System Settings › Privacy & Security on a Mac.
Locked notes
A locked note's title, words, and recording are encrypted on the device that locked them. Opening one asks your device to confirm you are its owner, using Face ID, Touch ID, Optic ID, or your passcode or password.
Please read this before you rely on it. The key never leaves that device and is never included in a backup or a device transfer. A locked note therefore cannot be opened on another device and cannot be recovered from a backup. If the device is erased, lost, or replaced, the contents are gone, and neither we nor Apple can recover them. Unlock any note you want to keep before you move to a new device.
Capturing from anywhere on a Mac
Thought Relay puts a bolt in your menu bar, and offers a keyboard shortcut that works while you are in another app. Choose the combination in Settings › Capture. If another app already owns that combination, Settings will say so — pick a different one, or use the menu bar icon.
The Thought Field on Apple Vision Pro
Choose Thought Field in the ornament under the window and your notes hang around you in the room, to either side of the window, newest and pinned first. Look at one and pinch to open it in its own window. Turn the Digital Crown to dim the room.
If something has gone wrong
- If the app says editing is paused, your saved notes could not be opened. Nothing has been changed or deleted. Try Again after unlocking your device, or relaunch the app.
- If a recording is waiting to become a note, use the recovery banner to save or export it.
- Close and reopen the app.
- Confirm your device is running a supported version of iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, macOS, or visionOS.
- Remember that we cannot access or recover notes stored only on your device.
- Please do not email note content unless you want us to read it.
