Use Metadata Cleaner on a Confluence page
Metadata Cleaner for Confluence inspects supported metadata in PDF and Word .docx attachments and saves a separate cleaned copy as a new attachment on the same page. The original attachment stays on the Confluence page unchanged.
Open the page containing the attachment. Open its More actions menu and choose Metadata Cleaner. Select a PDF or .docx attachment and choose Inspect metadata.
Review the detected removal categories and the separate preservation or inspection notes. Private metadata values are not displayed. Where the app identifies supported content changes, read the explanation and select the confirmation checkbox before choosing Save cleaned copy to this page.
Choose Save cleaned copy to this page to create a new attachment. People with access to the page can see it. The copy receives a separate Metadata-Cleaner filename with a unique identifier; no existing attachment is overwritten. When the save is confirmed, choose Open page attachments to review the copy or use Confluence’s download controls. Saving requires permission to add attachments to that page.
Supported files and limits
Files must be PDF or .docx, no larger than 2 MiB. Output is limited to 3 MiB. Document-complexity limits also apply, so a file below the size limit can still be unsupported. Encrypted, password-protected, digitally signed, damaged or unsupported document structures can be rejected. PDF incremental updates that redefine objects are unsupported.
Legacy .doc, macro-enabled Word documents, spreadsheets, presentations and standalone image files are not supported. Renaming an extension does not change a file’s actual format.
The attachment list checks up to 100 current attachments on the page. The app tells you when that list is incomplete. It does not search other pages or every attachment in your site.
What cleaning changes
Supported Word categories include document properties, comments and reviewer information, tracked revisions, hidden text, custom XML, custom variables and editor identifiers. Accepting tracked changes keeps inserted text and removes deleted text. Removing custom XML also removes its data bindings.
Supported PDF categories include document metadata, XMP or private application data, notes and markup, embedded attachments, and supported scripts or actions. The app asks for confirmation before changing or removing supported Word comments, tracked revisions, hidden text, custom XML, PDF markup or embedded PDF attachments.
What can remain
Visible document content, form answers, ordinary Word field results and embedded images can still identify a person. Metadata inside embedded images is not inspected. The app is not anonymization or visible-content redaction.
A successful check means the supported cleaning checks passed. It does not establish that the document contains no identifying information. Review the output and any preservation notes before sharing.
Licensing and allowances
Processing requires confirmed customer payment and a valid paid Metadata Cleaner Marketplace license. No free tier or free trial processing is offered. Production processing is currently closed because payment confirmation is not connected. An active license or an evaluation alone does not prove payment. Ask your Confluence administrator to manage the app’s license through Atlassian. A purchase for another Metadata Cleaner edition does not provide a Confluence license.
Each installation with confirmed paid access shares 500 processing attempts per UTC calendar month as usage included in the paid service. Inspection uses one attempt and cleaning uses another. Failed processing after an attempt has been reserved also counts. The allowance therefore permits at most 250 complete inspection-and-cleaning pairs; failures and repeated inspections reduce that number.
There is a separate allowance of 5,000 app initialization and attachment-list requests per installation per UTC month. Refreshing the list does not debit the 500 processing attempts, but counts toward the separate request allowance. The current version has no top-up or rollover control.
The price and billing period appear in your Atlassian Marketplace purchase arrangement. Use Atlassian’s billing interface for your subscription, cancellation and refund questions; contact us if you need help identifying the app or explaining a processing problem. This page makes no separate refund promise.
Common problems
No supported attachments
Check that a PDF or .docx file no larger than 2 MiB is attached to this page. Refresh the list after adding it in Confluence.
The attachment is unavailable
Confirm you can open that attachment using the same Atlassian account. The app requests attachment access as the current user.
The attachment changed, or inspection is required again
Inspect the attachment again. Inspection authorization expires after ten minutes and applies to the specific version inspected.
The file exceeds complexity limits or cannot be processed
The app could not complete its supported checks for that document. Keep the original and do not treat the failed request as a cleaned result.
The allowance has been used
Further requests in that allowance are unavailable until the next UTC calendar month. A timeout can consume an attempt even when no result reached your browser. Retrying inspection or cleaning is a new attempt.
The copy was saved, but no file appears on my device
Choose Open page attachments to find the saved Metadata-Cleaner copy. Use Confluence’s download controls if you want a copy on your device. Check your browser’s downloads and download permissions, then open and review the file before sharing. A confirmed page save does not confirm that a file was saved to your device.
The save could not be confirmed
The copy may already exist on the page even if a response was interrupted. Open page attachments and look for a new Metadata-Cleaner file before starting another attempt. The app does not automatically retry the save or delete an unconfirmed copy. Inspect again before a new save; another attempt can consume allowance and create another copy.
Saving is unavailable or permission is required
Page saving appears only when enabled for the app. Ask your Confluence administrator about access if it is unavailable. Confluence must allow your account to add attachments to this page. A permission error does not establish that a cleaned attachment was saved.

Email dean@myworkingmemory.ai. Include “Metadata Cleaner for Confluence,” the visible error message, the action you attempted, file format, approximate size and the time of the problem. Do not send sensitive documents, passwords, session information or inspection tokens. A synthetic example can help explain a reproducible issue.
Support is provided on a reasonable-efforts basis, without a guaranteed response time, resolution or file recovery.
